System Protection is critical. Firstlink's centrally fused power distribution protects valuable client equipment
from harmful power surges and spikes. Our UPS Power Protection System and diesel generator uses a true on-line
topology regenerating 100% output power to guarantee complete isolation and protection from all utility power
problems. Additionally, all of our critical servers are redundant; there is another machine mirroring each
server that can be immediately swapped if any hardware or software fails.
Our facility is redundantly connected to the Internet by three DS-3's and an optical fiber line. Any of these connections
may be used to carry traffic for First Link. Each of our Internet connections utilizes the Border Gateway Protocol
Version 4 (BGPv4) to provide redundancy.
In addition to connectivity redundancy, FirstLink also provides router redundancy using the Hot Standby Router
Protocol (HSRP). Each Internet connection connects to a Cisco 7206 VXR router running HSRP to a backup Cisco 7200
series router. Should one of the Cisco 7206 VXR routers fail, the backup 7200 series router at the site will
assume the failed router's gateway IP address(es) and Internet traffic. This allows the servers whose gateway
failed to use the backup router, with minimal interruption. This fail over occurs in ten seconds or less.
